Joey Porter Jr. Hopes To Finish Career With Cowboys

2 min read

Joey Porter Jr. is looking for more than just a fresh start in Dallas; he is hoping to find a permanent home. After a tumultuous tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers that culminated in a trade on Wednesday, the talented cornerback expressed his desire to spend the remainder of his professional career with the Cowboys. The move comes after a breakdown in contract negotiations with Pittsburgh, where Porter felt undervalued despite a lucrative offer made shortly before the season opener. Now reunited with former teammate George Pickens, Porter seems energized by the change of scenery and the opportunity to play for a franchise his entire family has supported since childhood.

The transition arrives alongside some welcome relief regarding Porter’s health. He had struggled with a lingering back injury throughout training camp and missed several early games in Pittsburgh, but those concerns seem to be fading quickly. Following his arrival in Texas, Porter passed his physical and jumped straight into practice on Thursday. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that the defender looked fluid and positive during his first session, leaving the door open for Porter to potentially make his official Cowboys debut this Sunday against the Texans.

While he is currently playing through the final year of his rookie deal, Porter says he is prepared to bet on himself in Big D. This mindset marks a sharp contrast to his relationship with the Steelers organization, where he refused to simply play out his contract due to feelings of disrespect. In Dallas, however, he sees a path toward long term stability. He told reporters that if the team feels the same way about him as he does about them, he would love nothing more than to retire wearing the star on his helmet.

For ownership and management in Dallas, securing Porter long term will likely depend on how effectively he can stabilize an injury plagued secondary. While there is clear mutual interest, any future massive payday will come with financial complications given that both Porter and Pickens are high profile assets facing potential free agency together soon. For now, though, Porter is focused on proving his value on the field and bringing pride to a family that has cheered for the Cowboys for generations.
